Designing energy markets for a net zero carbon future

The Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre promotes world-leading interdisciplinary research that facilitates the smooth transition of existing, emerging and new energy markets to a decarbonised future.

Energy markets will undergo rapid transformation as the economy decarbonises. Changes will involve:

  • the inclusion of carbon credit units
  • the integration of new energy sources and technologies, such as hydrogen
  • the use of smart meters and distributed energy systems.

About us

The Transforming Energy Markets (TEM) Research Centre draws on interdisciplinary expertise in economics, finance, engineering and law to address one of society’s greatest challenges.

Strategic priorities

Meeting the challenges of redesigning energy markets requires focus on new research methods and discoveries facing transitioning energy markets.

Our research centres on four core areas of expertise:

  • Energy market design and analytics: Energy market research focuses on the design, economic and econometric analysis of rapidly transforming energy markets.
    • Lead: Sean Foley
    • Co-lead: Vito Mollica
  • Energy market regulation and acceptability: We examine regulatory and social elements as the impact of energy transition processes, considering their social acceptability, and justice issues on accessibility and impact.
    • Lead: Madeline Taylor
    • Co-lead: Rohan Best
  • Transformative energy technologies: Technological innovation straddles the process of integrating transformative energy technologies into energy markets and how this contributes to more cost-effective and reliable energy, while also reducing carbon emissions.
    • Lead: Valdimir Strezov
    • Co-lead: Yijiao Jiang
  • Carbon Emissions, Capture, Storage, Credits, and Markets: Carbon management seeks to optimise outcomes for all participants in the energy economy. We explore options for carbon pricing, emissions trading and taxes, carbon credits trading, carbon offsets, carbon capture and storage for transparent and credible outcomes.
    • Lead: Tina Soliman-Hunter
    • Co-lead: Constantinos Yiallourides

Our objectives

We seek to redesign the entire energy system. Our research will light the path forward for:

  • the current structure of wholesale electricity markets
  • the creation and design of new markets
  • fair outcomes for market participants, households and communities
  • the integration of new energy sources and technologies
  • the effective management of carbon in the energy transition.

We will investigate and illuminate options for change for energy market stakeholders and decision-makers.
